Lakewood is a suburb that lies to the west of Denver and is surrounded by mountains. It’s mostly commercial, but there’s also a modern shopping district called “Belmar” that has its own “downtown” section.

Lakewood- the original community- was founded in 1889 after its namesake, Lakewood, NJ. They primarily grew apples. In 1969, Lakewood merged with other smaller communities and became the newly incorporated City of Jefferson City.
The City was renamed Lakewood in November of the same year to avoid confusion with Missouri’s capital. The government system is a council-manager form.

Special Events
In May, a trout fishing tournament is held at Bear Creek Reservoir which fifty teams participate in. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners. The event lasts for two days and is usually held in mid-May.
